An end and beginningfor class of 1988Four hundred and thirty-seven anxious but elatedseniors stood chatting in thebright May sunshine.Complaints of My cap isfalling off again and Do wehafta wear these collar-things?? could be heard.Teacher Susan McGlassonstarted the procession intothe Indiana UniversityAuditorium at 10 am sharpwith a Lets go people! andthe graduating class of 1988fell excitedly into step to thestrains of Pomp andCircumstance.Angela Cody gave theinvocation and KristenIngersoll gave thebenediction. Both of themwere veritable raconteurs,relating to the class acornucopia of good ideas andadvice for our flights to thefuture, praised valedictorianGreg Pugh. Cody spoke ofnine hopeful blessings;Ingersoll quoted a traditionalIrish blessing.Valedictorians were Pugh,Sarah DeHayes, GeoffNordloh, Isabel Piedmont,Amanda Raff, AnnetteRoberson, and Vicki Schober.Former principal (friend ofthe class of 1988 as he saidhe would like to be known)Gary Druckemiller greeted thegraduates. MCCSCsuperintendent LarryRowedder congratulated thegraduates and asked them tokeep only the fondmemories of high school andforget the rest. Don Beaverand Joel Marsh were Readersof the List of Graduates;Rowedder and Ernest Frazopresented the diplomas,assisted by Larry Martin.Class speaker FrancesMatthew spoke of the changethat occurs during highschool and the need to keepones mind open to the newexperiences and attitudesthat (one) encountersthroughout life. Quoting froma traditional blessing,Matthew asked the class togo forth into the world inpeace, with strength,courage, and goodness ofheart. This is an end. Thisis a beginning. This is achange. This is life, shesummarized.When it was all over, afterthe diplomas had beenreceived, the tassels turned,and the caps tossed skyward,family and friends gatheredoutside the auditorium togreet the newly graduated.Amid hugs and laughter, thecrowd gradually dispersed.The May sunshine seemedbrighter than ever.Yes, I finally got it!Graduating senior CharleneHoene raises her diplomavictoriously.190ft. |
