Fifth graders arent quitebig kids yet. On oppositeends of the childhoodspectrum, how do these twogroups get along when puttogether out in the middle ofthe woods for a week?Magnificently, thanks to theLeadership OpportunitesThrough Service (LOTS)Program.Throughout the schoolyear, MCCSC fifth graderslive for a week under thesupervision of seniors. Onehundred seniors, chosen fromapproximately 250 applicantsfrom both North and South, participated in the programthis year. In preparation forthis child-care marathon, theseniors attend a three dayretreat to learn songs, leadership skills, and generalchild care pointers, such asdrink a lot of coffee. Duringthe week spent at lU-ownedBradford Woods, seniorsrelive a little of their fadingchildhoods while they providesolid role models for their fifthgrade charges. LOTS givesstudents leadershipopportunities and an outlet forusing acquired leadershipskills, said LOTS senior GregPugh. Agreeing,Its a goodprogram that helps indeveloping leadership skills, said Curt Mallory. The seniors miss a week ofschool, but they feel its wortha slight academic delay. It isworth it to them to pass onthe good memories they haveof Bradford Woods when theywere there as fifth graders. In fifth grade, I thought theLOTS seniors were great, said Alicia Martindale. Nowthat I have become one, I findits as much fun as Iexpected.Seniors will go on tobecome adults and fifthgraders will turn intoadolescents, but thememories of Bradford Woodswill not be forgotten by eithergroup for the rest of theirlives.169-l^
