Description: New GIS systemOne of the most obviousjobs of the counselor isadvising students aboutcollege. With a new computersystem called GIS (GuidanceInformation System),information about differentcolleges is a lot easier toobtain. With this newcomputer system, studentsare able to obtain informati onon any college in the UnitedStates.The student enters thename of a college or a list ofspecific characteristics thestudent wants in a college.The computer will thenrespond, providing detailedinformation concerning acollege or a list of collegesmeeting the desiredcharacteristics selected bythe student. From that list,the student is then able tofurther investigate thesecolleges. The new guidancecomputer has increasedstudent-counselorcommunication, said Medlyn.With the librarys newcomputer system, studentsno longer have to fill out acard to check a book out.The students name istyped into the computer tocheck if the student has anyoverdue books. If not, thecomputer memory bankrecords the book aschecked out by reading acode off a sticker in the book.This eliminates the need ofhaving to file cards and istherefore much more efficient.Computers have made abig change in the guidanceoffice and library this year.Besides making the workeasier, it has made the officesmore efficient.
