Student ActivitiesRange FromAlacritousto ZanyWith pressure of tests and grades exertingforces on the student body, many found unusual outlets for their built up energies andanxieties. The pie eating contest at the aftergame Panther Fun Fair sponsored by thecheerleaders provided one such opportunity.Bill Turner ate his way to an overpoweringwin as Bob Fox and Jeff Greer closely followed. The fourth contestant, Lori Moore,found eating a whole pie posed a weightyproblem so she withdrew from the contest.Friday Diagonal period activities also supplied a time and place to study, rest, or burnenergy. From gymnastics, weightlifting, andswimming to science labs, computer programming and Future Lawyers, activities offeredsomething for everyone.BHSs own superhero of the school, DuckFoozle was a promotion effort for the Optimist. The villain Slippery Sleezle, was causinga great deal of trouble in the school until amild mannered Optimist reporter stepped intothe darkroom and transformed himself intoDuck Foozle who chased Sleezle from thepremises.Pep sessions vented the spirit of the participants as well as the spectators. Many creativeand hilarious ideas were presented at theafternoon gatherings.Co-ed teams were still forbidden in contactsports but several athletic minded girls formedpowder puff football teams for their respective classes. First the juniors challenged thefreshmen, who defeated their upperclassmenby a small margin. In the end the juniors camethrough and smashed the challenging sophomores.Students in Miss Kelseys journalism classquestioned a panel of three Bloomingtoncoaches and three local newspaper sportswriters to improve interviewing techniques.The coaches were Tom Sells, BHSS footballcoach; Bill Frohliger, BHSS golf and basketball coach; and Bob Weltlich an assistant basketball Coach at IU. Sports writers were J. D.Lewis, Courier-Tribune sports writer; BobHammel, Herald-Telephone sports writer; andBob Susman, sports writer for the IndianaDaily Student.26 |
