Description: Our special peopleWhen students are in classfulfilling their roles as students,and teachers are fulfilling theirjobs as teachers, there areother special people fulfillingtheir jobs as a nurse, cook,janitor or secretary.As head nurse of MonroeCounty Community SchoolCorporation, Norma Ropercoordinates the scheduling ofthe regular nurses to theschools in the system. She alsohelps with a variety of otheradministrative duties such asphysicals, scoliosis screeningsand immunizations. Immunizations, in particular, have been abig problem in the past, butthat has improved a greatdeal, according to Roper.The regular nurses attend toa student with any problem. Ifa student has an attendanceproblem, they find out if it ishealth related. All of the nurseswork closely with counelorsand social workers.A new addition to South thisOffice secretary Karen Robbins listenspatiently as parents call into the office.The secretaries spend approximatelyfifty percent of their time on thephone.FRONT ROW: Karen Langley, BeckyWhaley, Sara Jo Brummett. SECONDROW: Connie Hall, Lois Stephens.BACK ROW: Ina Todd, Karen Robbins.year was a remodeledcafeteria. With the cafeteria,come the cooks. JackieGrossnickle was appointed asnew manager along withMildred Clark who was appointed assistant manager.Grossnickle commented thatthey were feeding morebecause of the additionalenrollment. Students have achoice of what they want toeat, so there is not muchwaste. Grossnickle also statedthat the kids seem to have arespect for the new cafeteriabecause they arent as messyas they used to be.In the office area, thesecretaries are always busy.There are secretaries in themain, counseling, health, andattendance offices. Accordingto secretary Connie Hall, thecomputer has been a tremendous help to our job. Thecomputer includes all permanent records, schedules,locker information and attendance of all the students atSouth. A few of the many jobsof the secretary include typingfor teachers, managing theswitchboard, and making appointments for students to seetheir counselors.The janitors work around theclock to keep South looking itsbest. There is a night shift anda day shift of custodial duty.The janitors job includessweeping the halls, cleaningthe rooms and cafeteria, picking up on the grounds and attending to any repair work.It is easy to think of schoolsbeing made up of just teachersand students, but woe untoSouth if we didnt have theseimportant people to attend toour other specialized needs,and make our school runsmoothly.
