Description: South sends five to stateAn 8-1 BHS South girls swimteam record was enhancedwhen the 1984 season endedwith a second place in theSouth Central Conference anda sectional win. Five Southswimmers traveled to the statetournament in Indianapolis.The season went really well,the girls worked very hard. Andthe teams morale was veryhigh all year, said CoachPedro Sainz.At state the Panthers placed31st, with a total of 20 points.Juniors Lynn Dunning, WendyLowengrub, sophomore StacyRice, and freshmen TinaHarnett and Sabine Taaffe allqualified for state.The Panthers also beat BenDavis, a state swimmingpower, for the first time in BHSSouth history.Acting co-captain Dunningsaid, The season was great;we were high-spirited andbacked each other up. The B-Award and the Captain Awards,presented at the fall sportsbanquet, went to senior BetsyGoss (B-Award) and Rice (Captain). Dunning was presentedwith the 97WB fall athleteaward.Despite the successfulyear, Sainz said, We can stillimprove stroke-work. Sainzstated that the girls will workthis summer with the Bloomington Swim Club. I would liketo get an earlier start next yearand reduce the practice yardage, thus increasing a swimmers meet times, he commented. Year round trainingand dedication are essentialfor success in swimming.At a meet of crosstown rivals, juniorLynn Dunning of South (right) and AnnRuesink of North cut it up betweenevents.
