Harriers reach semi-stateA young, inexperiencedboys cross country teamcame off a disappointing dualmeet season and advanced tosemi-state before being knocked out of the tournamentseries. That was our goal, to makesemi-state, said first-yearcoach Larry Williams, and wehad to work to get there. Wecame together for sectionalsafter a disastrous (South Central) Conference.South also ran well inregionals, but then faltered, according to senior captain MarkMorris. Unfortunately, we ranpoorly in semi-state. If we hadrun the same times we did inregionals, we would have madeit to state, said Morris.Morris attributed some ofthe teams success to Williams.Coach Williams did a great jobof tapering us for the bigmeets. All of us got PRs (personal records) in either sectionals or regionals, he said.Although the team was inexperienced, it was made up withnumbers and talent. We had 24 runners, whichis the largest team in years, including seven freshmen, saidWilliams. We had many peoplerun varsity. I really didnt knowfrom week to week who wouldbe on varsity. This made theteam better because of thecompetition for varsity spots. It also brought the teamtogether.Among first-year runnerswas junior Tony Farmer, whofinished the season running inthe number one spot. According to Morris, he ran quitewell individually. Farmermade all-conference and placed in the top ten in both thesectionals and the regionals.Williams also said that Morrishad helped to make the teamsuccessful. Mark Morris did agood job of getting the teamtogether over the summer, said Williams. Williams was alsofortunate to have the servicesof first-year seniors Ron Evansand Richard Hollingsworth. At the beginning of theseason, the top five from lastyear were gone, so we had atotal reconstruction. The yearwas somewhat unfair toseniors because of the inexperience, but it was a good experience and everyone couldgo away from the season withtheir heads held high, saidWilliams.BHSSOPP.32 Bloomington North2361 North Central3928 Southport2721 Seymour3632 Columbus North2620 Bedford3728 Martinsville2718 Edgewood3918 Brown County404th Rushville Invitational5th Columbus East Invitational5th SCC4th Sectionals4th RegionalsBOYS CROSS COUNTRY TEAM:FRONT ROW: Jim Kelly, JasonKennedy, Matt Stryker, DanaBlumenthal, Steve Warren.
