Description: ^■^Burchfield, Espenlaub, and Milne retireThree of Bloomington High SchoolSouths faculty members —Gail Burchfield, William Milne, and RuthEspenlaub — retired at the end of the1982-83 school year.Burchfield began teaching in NewAlbany and later moved to the MonroeCounty Community School Corp.,where he has taught for the last 28years. He taught English for grades 8-11before moving into the social studiesdepartment. Since that time he has instructed students in U.S. history,geography, and social problems (a classhe developed and conducted for severalyears before it was dropped) and eventook over psychology for a year. He waschairman of the social studies department from 1965-75. Along with histeaching at South, Burchfield also taughtU.S. history at Indiana University fromARTHUR, Joann: Latin; Greek andLatin derivatives. Janet Ault:special education. Don Beaver:U.S. history; world civilizations.Pete Bellessis: anthropology; LOTSsponsor; department chairperson.1963-64. For the last 10 to 12 years, hetaught government and economics atSouth.Head librarian Ruth Espenlaub servedat Bloomington High School South for18 years before she retired at the end ofthe 1982-83 school year. Prior to comingto South, Espenlaub was a librarian atNorth Central High School in Indianapolis; Byron Junior High in ShakerHeights, Ohio; and another school innorthern Indiana. Espenlaub was also apublic librarian in Evansville. Besides being a librarian at various places, shespent one year overseas in La Rochelle,France.Over the years Espenlaub has notseen a great deal of change in thestudents with whom she has been involved. She feels that the underlyingqualities of students are the same.Espenlaub stated that good studentshave always maintained excellence.Espenlaub plans to enjoy her retirement by traveling, doing volunteer workfor her church and the community, andgardening during the summer.Milne taught a total of 33 years, 31 ofwhich were at South. He began as ascience teacher and retires as an assistant principal.Earlier in the school year, two Southteachers resigned. Kay Hutsell, biologyteacher and wrestling coach, resigned inFebruary because of personal healthreasons. Terry Quigley resigned duringthe first semester to pursue a business Icareer. Quigley had been an assistant ■cross-country coach for two years. During the 82-83 school year, he was an industrial arts teacher and head coach forthe cross-country team.tBERNHARDT, Joe: biology;science.
