South bids farewell to tough-guy MilneEDITORS NOTE: The following tributeto retiring assistant principal WilliamMilne appeared in the May 13, 1983,issue of The Optimist. Written by Optimist co-editor-in-chief Ann Georg, thearticle is reprinted here in its entirety. At the close of school on Wednesday,May 25, Blomington South will bidfarewell to one of its most beloved administrators — Bill Milne. After 31 years of service in theMonroe County Community Schoolsystem, assistant principal Milne willretire at the end of this year.Milne first came to the school systemin 1951, when he was a science, biology, and health teacher at Bloomington HighSchool. He also coached the crosscountry team and was an assistant trackcoach. In the fall of 1964, Milne went to DyerMiddle School, where he served as assistant principal until the fall of 1967, whenhe returned to South and assumed hiscurrent position.Besides being a prominent figure inthe school system, Milne has also been aprominent community figure. He is pastpresident and still a member of theBloomington Utilities Board and hasbeen involved in numerous other community activities.Milnes tough-guy image has struckterror into the boldest and bravest ofunderclassmen, yet his lovable but sternguidance has won him a place in thehearts of all students he has helped. Hisdeparture from South will leave a void inthe school which will be difficult to fill. His special charm, evident on the Friday afternoon announcements withreminders to take home books and studyhard, will be sadly missed. He has alwayshad definite opinions on all subjects—including journalism ( ... nomoney in it . . . ) —and makes many aprofound statement on any imaginablematter (news —no news is good news... ), which leaves you with an insightto his true personality. We can be sure that retirement forMilne will not be a rocking chair but fullof all the life and love he added to theschool. We wish him the best and hopethat he receives all the happiness inreturn for all the happiness he gave during his 31 years. Goodbye, Mr. Milne ...We will miss you.LEFT: William Milne knows exactlyhow to quiet down the auditorium.RIGHT: Milne receives a bouquetof balloons from Student Council onMr. Milne Day.Br170 William Milne_ |
