However, the team was veryconsistent and had no particularly badmatches, according to Finley, who tookover for head coach Kay Hutsell, whoresigned late in the season for personalreasons.Finley said Souths keys to successwere team balance, senior leadership,and the surprisingly good performancesof freshmen Tim Afanador, MikeBranam, and Joe Smith.Three seniors in particular — tri-captains Paul Farmer, Tim Scott, andJohn Staggs — were responsible for teamTOP: VARSITY WRESTLINGTEAM. They led the team andpushed people to get done what had tobe done, Finley said.After a season opening loss toLawrence Central, the team had severalfine performances, according to Finley.Finley said the most exciting match ofthe year was a 28-27 victory over Bloomington North, in which South had toforfeit the heavyweight match. Southmade up the lost points and more,however, as sophomore Jake Cornellsealed the win with a 14-9 decision in themeets final match.Another good dual meet performancefor South was in a 29-20 loss to highlyregarded Warren Central. Finley calledthe meet extremely close and exciting.Other highlights of the regular seasonwere winning Souths own Eight-waytournament and finishing second in theTrinity tournament. South beat DetroitCatholic, a perennial Michigan power,according to Finley.South began its post-season competition by winning its 15th consecutiveSouth Central Conference wrestlingcrown and went on to capture the sectional title as well.Although South was defeated at theregional and semi-state, five individualswere able to make it as far as semi-state,with seniors Joe Ackerman and TimScott advancing to the statecompetition.Scott, who was named the teamshonorary captain and B-man, finishedthird in the state meet; and Ackermanmade it to the final six in his weight division before being eliminated fromcompetition.Finley said other Panther wrestlersalso had outstanding seasons: seniorPaul Farmer, who was eliminated at theregional by the eventual state champion,and sophomore Mike Apple, who waseliminated at semi-state, also by an eventual state champion.102 Varsity Wrestling |
