THIRD ROW: JenniferOsborne, Alanya Harter, LennyKim, director Jane Gouker, LauraWisen, Carolyn Ferrell, RosemaryGodsey, Bard Polley.Walking through the halls of the musicdepartment at South, one heard thesound of instruments and the voices ofGreg Strang, band director, and JaneGouker, orchestra director, in 1982-83.In his second year at South, Strangtaught approximately 150 students in aband program which included a concertband, symphonic wind ensemble, andtwo jazz bands.Among activities in 1982-83, the jazzband was selected to play at theElmhurst Jazz Festival and also participated in the Cincinnati Conservatoryof Music Jazz Band Festival April 9. Thesymphonic and concert bands performedin Christmas and spring concerts.Thirty-five students participated in thestate solo and ensemble contest.Sophomore Heather Cramer, frenchhorn, and senior Lori Thoren, bassoon,made All-State Band. Junior Craig Black-ketter, alto saxaphone, made All-StateJazz Band.Gouker felt this was one of her mostsuccessful of the three years she hastaught at South. With 25 students, theorchestra size doubled from 1981-82.The orchestra performed in fall, spring, and Christmas concerts. It had participants in the All-State Orchestra in October and the state solo and ensemblecontest in January. The orchestra alsoparticipated in the All-City Festival andTheatre Souths production of ThurberCarnival.Annie Miller, violinist, made All-StateOrchestra along with Lori Thoren, bassoonist, who made first chair. ViolinistLenny Kim and celloist Mary Stigall werefirst-place winners at state solo andensemble.64 Instrumental Music
