Description: TLOTS seniors learn throughBradford Woods experienceThe 1982-83 school year marked thebeginning of a new program in theMonroe County Community SchoolCorp., which matched up the leadershipabilities of high school seniors with fifthgraders in the MCCSC.Leadership Opportunities ThroughService was instituted this year after being modeled after a similar Indianapolisprogram known as PLS (Project Leadership Service). Both LOTS and PLS werecreated to train seniors as leaders andpeer models for fifth graders. In the caseof LOTS, this occurred at fifth gradecamp at Bradford Woods, as well as ininteraction between the seniors and theirclasses throughout the year.According to Dave Ebeling, MCCSCassistant superintendent for elementaryeducation, the LOTS program helpedseniors become better acquainted withtheir classes and the teachers before theBradford Woods camp experience. Inprevious years the seniors were onlygiven a one-day orientation to the campbefore the fifth graders arrived. TheLOTS program, however, entailed afour-day trip to Bradford Woods earlierin the summer for seniors from North,South, and Alternative High Schools. Atthis time the seniors were familiarizedwith the camp.Bradford Woods, however, was justone of the LOTS program activities. Theseniors were in constant contact withtheir fifth-grade classes throughout theyear and participated in many leadershipseminars, at which leaders from the community shared their knowledge with theseniors. The LOTS program was funded for itsfirst year by a $7500 grant from Lilly Endowment and $500 from the MCCSCFoundation. Ebeling said that long termplans call for local businesses to becomeinvolved with the funding, as well asvarious fund-raising events organized bythe seniors.Although this was the first year, Ebeling said, I feel very positive about theleadership camp. ...
