Goss serves as officialat 1984 Olympic gamesBHS South horticulture teacher Marshall Goss was the managing official forthe track and field portion of the 1984Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.Goss was part of a 14-man committeethat selected 200 Olympic officials fromthe 635 that applied. After the selectionprocess, he was elected managing officialfor the games.Goss first duty was to fill all 1600 positions with the 200 officials. He also mapped out where they were to enter, stand,exit, and change between events.During the competition he coordinatedthe official part of the games. Goss was incharge of reviewing and replacing the officials, and he also conducted two dailymeetings during the competition.Goss is not a newcomer to officiatingnational events. He has worked at the National Sports Festival for four years andhas already made plans to work at thefestivals in the future.This summer he got a first look at thechosen officials at the national track andfield championships. Goss said, Thiswas valuable because I got a feel forthem.IU track coach Sam Bell said, Thiswas a great opportunity for Marshall. Hehas gained so much recognition aroundthe country. Goss has been an assistantto Bell for two years and has been thehead official at IU and the Indiana AthleticCongress. He had never worked theOlympics until this summer; but he attended the 1976 games in Montreal,Canada.Goss left July 22 to spend five dayspreparing and training with the other officials. The track and field events occurred Aug. 3-6 and 8-11. He stayed in adormitory complex just outside the Olympic Village.SMITH, Patricia: general business; handwriting;typing.
