Special services peoplekeep BHSS functioningMany people keep things runningsmoothly behind the scenes at BHSSouth. These special services peopleinclude cooks, counselors, custodians,librarians, nurses, and secretaries.Budget cuts in the Monroe CountyCommunity School Corp. have hit theseservices hard. Work loads have been increased the past couple years because ofstaff reductions. The custodial staff wascut to 17 for both the day and night shifts,which has, according to members of theSouth staff, increased the amount ofwork greatly.Norma Roper, Souths head nurse,agreed. Roper said this was a prettyroutine year, however. The health office performed a variety of services, likemaintaining immunization records, doingvision checks, and working withcounselors and social workers to helpstudents with problems.Other people who worked to keepSouth students healthy were the cooks.This year a deli bar and taco salad barwere added to the lunch selections toprovide more variety.South counselors had an addedTOP: Norma Roper, head nurse.MIDDLE: Del Searles, instructional mediasupervisor.BOTTOM: Marlin Birnbaum, head librarian.responsibility this year—overseeing thetransition of Alternative High Schoolstudents to South. Olga Eisenhowerreplaced Anita Hepler on the counselingstaff. The counselors felt the impact ofbeing cut from four full-time positions in1982-83 to three and four-tenths in1983-84. According to Roy Whiteman,the counselor-student ratio was increased to 1:450, which greatly decreased individual contact.South gained a new librarian this year.Marlin Birnbaum saw the library throughmany changes, both major and minor.One of the major changes was putting circulation and inventory records on the newcomputer. Other changes included newdirectional signs, update of informationfiles and career center, and the use of thebalcony for study purposes.The secretaries helped keep servicesrunning smoothly in the offices. At theend of first semester, Pat Sanders resigned as attendance secretary; she wasreplaced by Karen Langley.The whole service staff workedtogether to keep South runningefficiently.176 Special Services |
