Description:	Golfers are up, downbut have better seasonWe had a really up and down year. Attimes the whole team did really well andat other times not so well, but we were alot better than the last few years.Nick MagnusAn 11-3 season was the result of hardwork despite the early season cold andrain, according to Coach Mike Riggle.The best tournament was the HeritageHills Invitational, in which South placedfirst of eight teams with a total of 330.First-year coach Riggle said the teamdid well this season. For Riggle it was ayear of observation. The teamdeveloped in the direction I had in mind,and I now know where and how to makeimprovements, Riggle explained. Healso emphasized that this was a youngteam with potential.The most improved players for 1984were Derek Mobley and Jim Wilson, according to Riggle. The two reserveplayers dropped about 12 strokes offtheir games.Before the South Central Conference(SCC) tournament, in which the Panthers placed fifth, two or three of ourgolfers developed some problems; butthey showed real spirit and shot better,giving us a very encouraging sign, Rigglesaid.In sectionals the team fell nine strokesshort of advancing to regionals. The teamshot 335, placing fourth. However, NickMagnus and Steve Kennedy shot wellenough to qualify for the regional.Practice this year was jumbledbecause of cold weather and rain early inthe season, Riggle said. He also notedthat because of this jumbled practiceschedule, not as much drill work wasdone, which slowed down our progress.Riggle hopes to solve this problem in thefuture by getting an indoor practice area.TOP: Junior Nick Magnus concentrates as he putts.MIDDLE: With determination reflected on his face,freshman David Wrenn tees off.BOTTOM: BOYS GOLF TEAM.
