-*— •-Basketball team avenges lossesI learned that to be successful, youhave to make a commitment. Basketballhas shown me that you have to work hardfor the things you really want in life.Andy WalkerSouths varsity basketball team set outto avenge its losses by paying back thoseteams that defeated the Panthers duringthe 1982-83 season. According to CoachJ. R. Holmes, (the team) avenged nineor 10 of the 13 teams (South) lost to theyear before. The varsity team finished with a winning record of 14-8 after being 8-12 lastyear. There were many valleys and peaksthrough the year, Holmes said of the1983-84 season. Holmes believes theteam members worked hard, but theynever realized their potential. We played well in the Columbus Northand Brebeuf games, considering the opposition. We scored more againstWashington and West Vigo, but Columbus North and Brebeuf were betterteams, Holmes said.Junior Chris Bomba agreed the 71-51victory over Columbus North was ahighlight because the team memberswere psychologically up for that game. Itwas a battle all the way. I didnt knowhow far ahead we were til I looked up atthe clock, Bomba recalled. The Panther team scored 100 pointsfor the first time in Souths history for awin over West Vigo. Bomba describedthis game as the best game fun-wise.South never had one dominant player.Holmes felt this was an asset because aplayer could excel on a given night anddo good things for the team.I didnt like the results at the end ofthe season, but you learn, said Holmesof the sectional loss to Bedford. It washard to take getting beat. The first half we really played scared;we were intimidated. The second half weplayed really well and hard, but there wasfoolish fouling and stopping the clock thatallowed them (Bedford) to score andcatch up. We didnt show good mentalalertness, and we made a couple of errorsas well,Holmes said. The most disappointing loss wasagainst B-NL in the battle for the sectional title, Bomba agreed. South lost toBedford by one point in sectional play theprevious three years, once under formercoach Bill Springer and twice underHolmes.According to Holmes, next years teamlooks good on paper. Many major letter award winners will be back, and thereis a lot of size. In conclusion, CoachHolmes said, Well come back nextyear, play a little harder, and work a littleharder. We have to rekindle desire andset a goal to win.LEFT: Sophomore Brad Jackson drives in for alay-up.MIDDLE: Junior Steve Hall shoots for two.RIGHT: An intense senior Jordy Curts sets up for thenext play.102 Boys Varsity Basketball |
