But Castle will alwaysstand out in my mind.Todd EastonFor the gridiron Panthers, it was aTotal Commitment year, according tohead coach Dave Enright, who led histeam to an undefeated season, a sectional title, and regional title. The Panthers ended with a 12-1 recordand a chance in the playoffs. For the firsttime since 1973, the South team had anextended season, consisting of sectional, regional, and semi-state games.Enright set eight goals for his team atthe beginning of the season. Six of thesegoals were met: city, county, cluster, andconference championships, as well assectional and regional titles. The othertwo goals were semi-state and state victories. Enright never set beingundefeated as a goal. It was an addedbonus and a great accomplishment.Total Commitment was the teamsmotto for 1983, a motto Enright felt theteam carried out well. He said theydid all the necessary things to make forTotal Commitment, above and beyondthe call of duty. According to Enright, the Panthers were team oriented ratherthan individually oriented. He explained,Team things became the mostimportant.Enright cited the Castle game as theone in which the Panthers looked theirbest. He said, They kept fighting anddidnt quit until the game was over; andquit they didnt. With 1:48 left in thegame, the Panthers found the scoreboardin their favor. Then a Castle field goalgave the lead to the Knights. Because Southlost the game, the end of the season wasfilled with mixed emotions for Enright andthe rest of the team.According to the coach, the team wasso proud of what theyd given and accomplished; yet they were just athread away from being statechamps—eight short days. The boyswerent ready to take their pads off;theyd come so far compared to lastyear.Enright also credited the community fora total community effort for a total commitment year. He said without the support of the crowd, the team couldnt havegotten better. Enright said he didnt knowwhether the team improved because thesupport improved or the support improved because the team improved. According to the coach, having someone (thecommunity) in your corner makes youfeel like whipping the world.TOP LEFT: Senior Lin Churchill stays just out of anopponents reach.TOP RIGHT: Coach Dave Enright stands up for hisrights.BOTTOM: Senior Jeff Teague is wide open for a run-back on a kickoff.Varsity Football 89 |
