Description: South wins sectional, SCC,Invitational in 23-8 seasonUnder the direction of head coach JimMcMillan, the 1979-80 Panther baseballsquad fought its way to first-place finishes insectional play, the Bloomington Invitational,and the South Central Conference. According to Coach McMillan, the team had somepretty good performances while compilingits 23-8 final record.The Panthers play impressed others, too.Team members Scott Fifer, David Meredith,Aaron Pettiford, Pat Reagan, and Jim Stafford were selected as All-Conference players, while Fifer and Meredith made All-South, an all-star team of southern Indianaball players. Meredith was named to thefirst-team All-State team, and Fifer andReagan received honorable mentions. Fiferwas also offered a full athletic scholarship toNorth Carolina State University.The team, which McMillan said hadplayed two years together and won about45 ball games, included 12 graduatingseniors.Bloomington South, however, will mostlikely enjoy a winning baseball team for thenext few years as well. The reserve Panthershoned their baseball skills under the tutelage of Marv Griffith. They also played theirway to better than a 70-percent win percentage with a 5-2 record.Souths freshman ball club, guided byRick Fletcher, added to the assurance of agood baseball future for Bloomington Southas they finished their season 4-2.TOP: Taking a good cut at the pitch,Kerry Griffith added good defensive playst first £)9S6MIDDLE LEFT: As Souths ace of thepitching staff, Scott Fifer was a very valuable asset for the team.MIDDLE RIGHT: Keeping the strongbaseball tradition going, Coach McMillanguided another South team to a winningyear.206 Varsity Baseball
