Description: Boys finish third, girls first in sectionalsVThe Panther boys track team finished the80 season with a 4-3 dual meet record anda third-place finish in sectional competition.Undeniably, many of the seasons brightest points were sparked by the muchvaunted vaulting of senior Dave Volz. Winner of the National Junior Olympics goldmedal in pole vaulting, Volz is also an alternate to the Junior Olympics team and fourthin the nation in pole vaulting. Volz has wonsuch prestigious events as the state meet,the Carmel Classic, Hoosier Indoor Relays,Indianapolis Black Expo, and the HoosierHills Conference. Volz broke the schoolrecord in the pole vault (1ZTz), low vault(143), and the long jump (231/2). He isalso a strong competitor in the 100-yd.dash, high jump, and high hurdles. Volzmaintains, not surprisingly, that pole vaulting is his favorite.Souths last regular season competitionwas a narrow 72-65 defeat by arch-rivalBloomington North. Despite the loss, CoachMarshall Goss considered the contest afine meet.Many Bloomington South athletes turnedin good performances. Volz received an eighth placein high hurdles and first in pole vaulting; KenWaterhouse, ninth in the mile; and Rechter,eighth in the 800-meter.Volz, Waterhouse, and Rechter werenamed to the Indiana All-Star team. Alsomembers of the team, Butch Harris, Routt,Ron Trenta, and Tim Fulford broke theschool record for the 400-meter relays.This years Bloomington South girls trackteam ended its dual meet season with a 6-1record. The team was South Central Conference and sectional champ, tied for fourth inthe North Central Invitational, and fourth inregionals.Coach Carol Stevenson was verypleased with how the team performed thisyear. Many new school records were set.Senior Beth Bomba soared to a new schoolrecord in the high jump, and sophomoreGlenda Rice set new South records in boththe shot put and discus. Stevenson feltsophomore Chris Brauner did a super jobfilling (senior) Kim Harriss shoes in the longjump this year. Harris was unable topete toward the end of the season bof an injury.The most exciting meet, according tjvenson, was against Bloomington Noriwas nice feeling that we beat them,said. The most memorable meet, StJson felt, was either that against Terre INorth or the SCC. We lost againstHaute North, but it was the effort that!it memorable, the coach said.
