Be here!South musicians whose tastes lie in jazz,symphonic music, orchestra, or marchingwere busy this year under the watchful eyesand commanding voices of Kern Hawkins,director of bands, and Stephen Inscoe,orchestra conductor.The jazz band swang into action in earlyfall with a jazz festival. Dominic Spera, of theIndiana University School of Music, andDave Pavolka, of Batchelor Middle School,were guest players and acted as judges.Jazz bands converged on South for the1979 version of this annual event.The marching band was also off to anactive start—the first nine weeks of schoolwere filled with football games and otherband obligations. The Marching Panthersplaced 19th out of 31 competitors in theIndiana State Fair marching band contestand 16th in the state field championship.The band presented its winter concert Dec.12 and played at a home-court North-Southbasketball game a week later.The orchestra performed its first concertof the year Dec. 4 and competed in variouscontests throughout the spring.Volunteers from both band and orchestracompeted in a Bloomington area solo andensemble contest in late January. Many performed well enough to earn the privilege ofcompeting in the state contest later in theyear. A convocation of their combinedforces was presented in February, giving\students a small taste of the spring corfcto come.Outside of more fluid tonguing , rJtone, and proper concentration of dyrjics, fund-raising was one of Bloominn^,Souths music departments major oflfives this year.Members of the marching band soldcakes, cookies, and candy throughouLyear for their trip to Washington, D.Cearly May.
