Description: Panthers march to the tune of VictoryWith the recent building of a new bandroom, the bands themselves have also beenbuilding—building pride and a reputation.The Bloomington South Marching Pantherswere successful in their first year of competition at State Fair, taking 19th place in themost prestigious marching band contest inIndiana.This was one of the highest rankings everawarded to a first-year band. Director KernHawkins was very pleased with the accomplishment.Next the band competed in the IndianaState Music Assn. Festival in Huntingburg,where it received a first-division rating. Thisqualified the Panthers for competition at theall-state level in Terre Haute, where theband again received a first-division ratingand 16th place over-all.Hawkins summarized the bands aspirations: As we are beginning to reach ourpotential as a band, we continue to moveour goals up even higher. Next year insteadof the top 16, well be competing with thetop five. After state well compete on thenational level; and when we win there, wellkeep right on going.One of Hawkins goals as band directorwas to establish a well-rounded musicprogram. To Hawkins this means equalopportunities are shared by, and equalefforts are expected from, symphonic, jazz,and marching bands.Funds were raised by the band memberst|i^^nMBni :^ % ■.. s ■-tJK^and Band Boosters through athletic csions and car washes, as well as the t^traditional fruitcakes and Charles CLproducts during the holiday season. TrTfunds were used for new uniforms; eqlment; and expenses of the bands trijWashington, D.C., for an international mlfestival. In addition to the Marching Fthers, the symphonic band and Jazz Baalso went on the trip; all three bandsformed in the festival.According to Hawkins, the major obfive of the Bloomington South hthroughout the 1979-80 school year waestablish a name and represent Souththe community in a way in which everycould be proud.TOP: At Huntingburg the Marching Panthers perform To Life.
