Students introduced into business worldThrough lessons on merchandising,sales, finance, typing, and filing, as well ason-the-job training, DECA, OEA, FSA, andCOE at South introduced many students tothe business world.Jerry Denny, distributive educationinstructor, helped train young people in thefield of merchandising. Juniors and seniorslearn both in the classroom and on the job.Students enrolled in the program receiverecognition through contests sponsored bythe Distributive Education Clubs of America.Contest subjects include finance and credit,sales demonstration, and merchandising. Inall, Souths 55 DECA members participate inapproximately 27 competitions yearly.DECA is designed to train people for positions in retail merchandising.The Cooperative Office Education program, sponsored by Patrica Smith and MaryJane Trinkle, is directed toward office positions rather than retail work. COE classesprepare students for jobs as secretaries,clerks, and receptionists. Juniors are prep-ped in skills needed for the job assigned tothem as seniors. All seniors enrolled mustget a job to fulfill the requirements of theclass. Employers give progress reports, andstudents also receive classroom grades.COE is a vocational program offered atSouth to both North and South studentsThrough Future Secretaries of Ame(FSA), Ruth Schurtter and Trinkle, co-spsors from South; Betty Mercer from NMadeline Baynes of Edgewood; and Bmary Johns of Indiana Bell all assist mbers in their specialized fields. The clubmet with secretaries at Indiana Belimprove the students techniques of oand phone procedures.Students planning office careers canfurther their education by joining OfEducation Association (OEA), sponsorsTrinkle, assisted by Smith.
