Description: Lasting friendshipsimportant to studentsAn important part of high school —besides learning, studying, and participating in extracurricular activities—is makingfriends, some that will remain very close fora lifetime.I think now is the time that Ive mademany close friends. Some of them I stillhope to see 20 years from now, said onesenior. Definitely what I will remembermost, looking back on my high school days,- are my good friends.Ideas on what makes a good friend werefairly similar: someone you never feel self-conscious around . . . someone who isgenerous and caring and whom you canconfide in ... a true friend is someoneyou can tell anything to, and they wontlaugh in your face; they listen and sincerelytry to help. . . someone who really caresabout your problems, even though theyrebusy—someone in touch with your feelings. One senior boy complained about theconfinements of certain relationships. Itsvery hard to develop true friendships, especially with people of the opposite sex. Whycant a guy go out with a bunch of girls whoare just his friends? Because his girlfriendwould be out hitting him over the head witha club, if he wanted to go out with friendsthat happened to be girls—thats why.Friendships with girls are really tough. Ifyoure seen with a friend who happens to bea girl, everyones all ready to put the ringson the fingers.A poet once said, A friend is someonewho leaves you with all your freedom intactbut who, by what he thinks of you, obligesyou to be fully what you are.LEFT PAGE: Students demonstrate various handshaking methods.ABOVE: Judy Biggs, Dawn Day, WendyMulholland, and Julia Martin munchdown at the senior class picnic.
