The price Carter paid, however, for his reopening of China was the cutof all U.S. ties with the Nationalist Chinese,or Taiwan. Some accused Carter of committing a cowardly act that stabs in theback the nation of Taiwan. Some calledhim disgraceful, but most Democratsdutifully supported the President in hisendeavor. IEgyptian President Anwar Sadat and.Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin metwith Carter in September for what came tobe called the Camp David Summit. Whenlthe conference was over, the three leaderssigned an agreement in preparation for aMkteast peace treaty between the hostile^countries. The agreement resulted in Sadat|and Begin being co-awarded the 1978Nobel Peace Prize.Aldo Moro, who had served as premier ofItaly five times between the years 1963-76/was abducted by terrorists March 16, 1978.Kidnappers warned the government thatunless their groups leader and 12 otherswere freed, Moro would be killed. Authorities refused to give in, and two months laterMoros bullet-ridden body was found in anabandoned car in Rome.Also in Rome, two popes were buriedwithin a month of each other. Pope Paul VIdied of a heart attack Aug. 6; and PopeJohn Paul, who reigned for only 34 days,died of a heart attack Sept. 28.For the first time in 455 years, the cardinals reached beyond Italy for a successor tolead the Roman Catholic Church. Theychose a 58-year-old Pole named KarolWojtyla, who chose the name John Paul II.In a bizarre tragedy in Guyana, SouthAmerica, San Francisco Peoples Templecult leader Jim Jones led a mass suicide,leaving more than 900 men, women, andchildren dead. U.S. Sen. Leo Ryan waskilled on an airstrip after arriving in Guyanato inspect Jonestown, the cults settlement.Hours after the airport massacre, Guyanatroops found the more than 900 victims offound dead nearby of bullet wounds.The streets of Nicaragua were filled withthe sound of guerilla gunfire.
