. . . Making Way for the NewA new name, Bloomington HighSchool South, became one ofseveral changes initiated at Bloomington in 1972. The name change, amajor issue the previous spring, sparked interest and studentinvolvement. In a May meeting, thedecision of whether BHS shouldretain its name and also the creation of a name for the new highschool stood before the MCCSCSchool Board. With over three hundred students in attendance, theboard listened to arguments for andagainst a name change, and at theclose of the meeting, tabled theirdecision. In a later, less wellattended meeting, the board passeda resolution: Bloomington HighNorth and Bloomington High South.Accompanying the name change,Bloomington South was strengthened by the addition of SmithvilleHigh School. As the union betweenSouths and Smithvilles identitiesgrew, new traditions formed fromthe best of each school.Resulting from the completion ofNorth, evolved the middle schoolsystem. This system moved theninth grade forward into highschool life. Slightly bewildered andsomewhat skeptical, the freshmenjoined by the incoming sophomores, found a place within the walls ofBloomington High School South. As these major changes occurredin the 1972-73 school year it seemscoincidental that they did come atthis time, for Bloomington HighSchool no longer exists in the context that it was known throughoutthe state. BHS has split into twoseparate units, each going its ownway, all coming in the tenth decade, one hundred years from the beginning.10 |
