rBaseballteam endsseason 13-9Coach Jim McMillans baseball Panthers finished the season with a 13-9regular season record.Seniors Larry Blackwell and Craig Buffie were nominated for the All-State baseball team. Blackwell was also selected forthe Ail-American team. Blackwell playedleft field and first baseman. Buffiepitched and played third base.McMillan described his young team asbeing weak in experience but a toughteam nonetheless. He also noted a greatimprovement in the teams hitting anddefense during the season. The energycrisis resulted in a later than usual starting date for practice.The team was armed with six strongpitchers.McMillan believes his Panthers hadone of the toughest schedules in Indiana.South placed seventh in the South Central Conference.The Panthers defeated Brown County8-3 in the first round of the sectional.However, South lost to BloomingtonNorth, 8-5, in the finals.Coach Marvin Griffith believes thereserves completed a successful season.Composed primarily of sophomores,many reserves doubled as varsity playerswhen the reserve season ended.The Panthers found their toughestcompetition to be Bedford and ColumbusNorth.
