My best friendKaty GranboisMy best friend ever was my pet rat. He was named Reepi-cheep, after a favorite character in a book I read. The characterwas a talking mouse. The book was The Voyage of the DawnTreader, by C. S. Lewis. Sometimes it almost seemed as ifReepicheep could talk. He had a variety of squeaks and chatters which meant anything from Ouch to I love you. Healways chattered his teeth together when he was happy.Reepy was big for a laboratory rat. He was big enough to lieacross my whole neck, where he would grunt and sneeze contentedly. He had a tickly sneeze! Reepy was white, with inquisitive eyes and a bunch of enormous whiskers. I dont think hisnose was ever still. He used to ride on my shoulder, holding ontightly with his toenails. I have many scars on my shoulderswhere he held on a little too tightly.Reepy was as affectionate as any dog. Whenever he heardme coming, he would jump against his cage and play. When Ilet him explore my room, he would stick his head out fromwherever he was and look out when I called his name. If Iwalked around my room, he would follow me. He would climball over my closet, where I would often find him curled up fastasleep on my fuzzy slippers after a busy afternoon of chewingon my old tennis shoes. One of Reepys greatest loves was peanut butter. My friendtook care of him for four months, while I was out of town. Shehad a special jar of peanut butter just for him. He would grab ahandful of it and lick it off his paw daintily. He would eat almostanything, but his favorite was peanut butter. When he was two, Reepy began to show signs of age. Hemoved more slowly than he used to, and his hind leg was stiff. The vet said Reepy had arthritis in his hind leg. Only a fewweeks after his third birthday, Reepy died. I still think abouthim and miss him. My mother says I might be able to getanother rat, but I dont think it would ever take the place ofReepicheep.Jill Dalrympleir^vjLynn AbbottBlur-Dave JenkinBeth HaganCreativity 167 |
