Tearful staffs try to keep sanityTearful and panic-stricken, the editors,photographers, and writers of The Optimist and Gothic tried to keep their sanityas minor crises always surfaced neardeadline times.The Optimist was under the leadershipof co-editors Bill Duff and Lori Hepler.Production of the bi-weekly newspaperbegan in mid-August so that a WelcomeBack issue could be published duringthe first week of school. Later issues carried consumer surveys and features onsmoking and cheating, as well as specialcoverage of teacher negotiations.Gothic production was organized byLisa Roper, editor-in-chief, and MarthaGriggs, associate editor. Deadlinesbegan in November, although ideas werecollected and planning was donethroughout the summer.Several staff members attended theIndiana High School Press Associationconvention at Franklin College in October. Junior Elizabeth Burke was chosento represent The Optimist in the IHSPAcontest at the workshop; she broughthome third place.Students gathered new ideas frompublications in other schools at week-long newspaper and yearbook workshopsat Indiana University during the summerof 77.132 Gothic/Optimist |
