Wrestling team earns state titleSouths varsity wrestlers completedtheir regular season with a record of 6-1 -1 and went on to capture the state championship under the leadership of CoachKay Hutsell.The Panthers defeated Warren Central48-47 for the first-place spot.Individual state champs were juniorSam Ackerman at 98 pounds and seniorKeith Saunders at 119 pounds. In thefinal round Ackerman won by a 4-1 decision; and Saunders, by a 7-0 decision.Junior Kevin King also advanced tostate, but he lost in the first round. Senior Trent Bower placed third in the state145-lb. division.Ackerman, Bower, and Saunders wereundefeated at their respective weights,although Ackerman lost one matchbefore moving down to the 98-lb. class.The teams success is largely due toseveral years of rebuilding and is likely tocontinue next year since only four of thevarsity wrestlers were seniors.During the season the matmen annihilated most of their opponents, despiteone tie and a disappointing loss to cross-town rival Bloomington North.
