Description: BE HAPPY BE HEALTHYFor many North students, PE class is a way toescape school stress and incorporate activityduring mostly sedentary days. Many studentsvalue their time in the gym.Senior Nina Castro-Sauer, who won TeamSports Student of the Year this year, enjoys the class so much that despite tearing her ACL last June, sheparticipated in the class for the entire year. In fact, the class gave her a built in time during school hours towork on her physical therapy exercises to hasten the recovery from her injury.I know that freshman PE and other classes like team or racquet sports arent necessarily a hardworkout or anything, but its a nice way to incorporate a little action during the day, especially for studentswho dont play outside sports or participate in other physical activities, Castro-Sauer said. Its also oneless class with homework. She recommends taking PE classes to any North student, even those that are not as athleticallyinclined. Team Sports is the most fun, in her opinion. For the athletes, though, Castro-Sauer recommends the Advanced Strength^aining class.I took it my sophomore through my senior year, and when I was playing basketball it really helpedme get stronger, she said.Junior Lynn Teter, who won Outstanding Student in Weightlifting, said that the Advanced StrengthTraining class helped her gain strength, as well. I really feel like Ive gotten stronger since my freshmanyear when I first started taking it, Teter said. For both girls, physical education classes provide safe spaces to de-stress and have fun during the^school day. Although much different than those taught in the traditional classroom setting, PEclasses have taught them important lessons.4 8 Sometimes you work hard and dont improve, and youve just got to keep trying, Teter said.
