132I Theater Mom SayS Goodbye - Francesca Sobrer. living legacy at North for twenty years, is retirinthe end of this school year. Sobrer, best known for her work with the theater program, has also impacted students, so much scthat they think of her as the Mother figure at North. She cares about all of her students and is there to support them whenever needed, sophomore Isa Balle-Voyles said.Through even sad moment she has been there to discuss it, help us make an understanding of it. and support us.Even though Sobrer is ready to leave, she will miss teaching. When asked what she will miss most, Sobrer fought backtears. ■■«■■■■■» ^-t—■^I dont think theres a decent teacher out there that wont say they arent going to miss their students, she said. Wevehad a lot of fun and [North students! have great heart and I just love being a part of that. Im going to miss how alive you feelin this energy. At the same time Im not going to miss that energy. I mean sometimes I just want to take a nap and read a book!*Looking back on her years at North, Sobrer believes shes leaving as a different individual. My life has changedcompletely in the last six years [...] but in that reflection, regardless of what my students might say, I am a much more calmerand more patient person than when I first started, Sobrer said.Sobrer fell in love with theater when she was just 14. My mother said I was bom to be an actress, so I guess I was adramatic child, Sobrer said.Sobrers lifelong passion for theater translates to her students. She was just like them at one time, which might be part ofthe reason why she connects with them the way she does. One of the things that I have wanted to do in my life is to do something that has purpose and could make a difference,Sobrer said. I think Ive done that. But now, twenty years later, she is ready to leave. Many people have asked Sobrer if shes nervous about being bored when she retires, but she responds in a wave ofexcitement.I kind of would like to know what its like to not be so busy, she said. Im not that worried about it. I think Ive beenbored maybe five minutes of my entire life. But, even with travel plans and new adventures in the horizon, Sobrer hopes her students continue to grow. She also hopesthey will never let fear overpower their success. This would be my only regret, is how many times I didnt do something because I was afraid, Sobrer said. Of what? Idont know. The minute we let fear stop us, we have stopped. Her students wish her the best of luck and hope she knows just how much shes impacted them and their careers in theater. Her being so willing to hear you and help you makes me feel as though youre her equal, senior Gaia Hendrix-Petry said. She respects you which really helped me to feel as though I fit in the black box which made it possible for me to grow as muchas I did throughout high school. |
