ming Up to CompetitioV1S>At\For some students, the thought of extracurricular studying is undesirable. ForScience Olympiad students, completingscience projects and studying forcompetitions are leisure activities. There are different events for thedifferent fields of science that eachstudent will be assigned to after they joinscience olympiad. They find out if theymade the team in late November, andthen they will start to prepare forcompetition season, which starts in themiddle of January.Preparation for importantcompetitions in Science Olympiad can be ^^»very demanding and pressured. The week leading up to either an pinvitational regional or state [...]everyones in their room, running aroundin the hallways, trying to get building >/events figured out, and trying to getreference sheets put together, sophomore Arianna Buehler said.Especially over breaks its stressful [...]because you have to do so much work over it since you dont have time during the school year.On top of studying for and completing Science Olympiad projects, sophomore Jerrett Alexander has also been takingseveral strenuous classes at North this year.Right now its kind of hard to study for finals while doing other stuff with Science Olympiad, Alexander said.Much like Alexander, Buehler has had challenges with finding time herself. For one of my building events last year, it took about 35 hours to build a bridge, and we built over 30 of them in lessthan six months so there was a huge time dedication, Buehler said.Despite the enormous pressures that are put on these students to ibeing in Science Olympiad, many of them believe all the hard work pays off in the end.It takes up a huge chunk of time, but its definitely worth it, especially if you do good, Buehler said. Not only do participants benefit from the education that comes along with the experience but friendships andmemories are made as well.Probably the majority of my friends are through science olympiad or we have stayed good friends because of it,Buehler said. We are there most days after school working right beside each other.Vogelsanis to his nstory by: Emma Alexander |
