wNydgstSTUDENTS STOP READING?Perhaps you were a bookworm once. Books provided a fantasticalI escape from the ordinary world, and you could spend hours lost in theuniverse of Harry Potter, Percy Jackson, or Katniss Everdeen. Overtime, however, you stopped reading. Maybe things got too busy inschool or your personal life, maybe other forms of entertainment liketechnology replaced books, or maybe reading simply stopped being fun| for you.For the book club members of North, this never happened. Theystill talk enthusiastically about books they like, characters they relate to,and authors that inspire them. Book Club is a place to talk with other| avid readers who share the same passion for literature as them.We get to share our ideas, said freshman Kunga Lhamo, and II get to understand more about [the book were reading] and hear other| peoples views about it.However, new North librarian Ms. Yoho knows that an interest inheading is not common amongst middle schoolers and high schoolers, particularly middle school boys, because reading is not as entertaining| as it was in elementary school.Research reports that middle school boys stop reading because thefun goes away, said Yoho. They associate it with school. In fact, like many other kids, senior Jeremy Schneider lost interestI when he was in middle school.I lost time, I lost interest, Schneider said. I started playing videoI games and watching Netflix, and reading seemed boring in| comparison.Yoho is understanding of how people can find reading boring over(time, especially when kids are forced to finish books they dont like. She and the American Library Association agree that everyone shouldtry to start books, but should never be forced to finish one they dislikeas long as they contribute to book discussions in school and give goodreason for why they dont like the book. This is okay, she says, because| different people like different books.Even though [a book] is bad in your opinion, someone else canlove it, said Yoho.John Green, for example, is an author who earns equal amounts of| criticism and praise.John Green is like marmite, said book club president Forrest| Burdette. You either love it or you hate it.The book club members know that for a lot of people, reading isntI easy, especially when life is so busy. If you used to be a bookworm and] want to get back into reading, or if you just want to get into reading inI general, the book club recommends exploring different genres andpicking out books that you wouldnt usually go for. But, most of all, dont be intimidated.Youre not making a commitment, said Burdette. You can| always stop reading it and start reading something else. For specific books to read, check out Book Clubs Top Picks forI good book recommendations. As the book club knows, the magicalI world of reading will always be waiting to welcome you back in.story by: Hannah Johnsonjsn-wc-iilth*~\John Green islike marmite ...You either love itllor you hate it.-Forrest Burdette |
