Description: /OD£MIC TG4MSMR. PHILBECKS SPELL BOWL SL,eremyWhat do local high school teacher Steve Philbeck, a spelling competition, and the Triple X family resteraunt have in common? Theyre all a part ofthe Spell Bowl Club here at North.Steve Philbeck, who teaches in the social studies department atNorth, hosts a few clubs and a very prominent one would be the SpellBowl Club. Spell Bowl is a very structured spelling competition hostedby the Indiana Association of School Principals. The program is arecognized state championship, which entails many benefits for thosewho win the competition.People get involved because its a recognized state championship,if youre on the Spell Bowl team and you get to go to the state, that lookscool on your resume, Philbeck said. The club here at North is not very official but students interested canjoin when Philbeck puts up a Spelling and Competition selection on thetutorial scheduler. The tutorial is a great place to blow off steam andcompetitively spell with other like-minded individuals and is a great placeto practice for the regionals tournament. Many students who are goodspellers dont join the club because they feel itll interfere with their otheractivities, when in fact the club only meets in tutorial. Most students who join come in as freshman and continue to be apart of the club for all 4 years of high school, Philbeck said.To make the club rewarding for the students who win regionals andmove on to state, Philbeck hosts a dinner at the Triple X familyrestaurant. The restaurant happens to be located at Purdue, where the statecompetition for the Spell Bowl is hosted. Our ultimate holy grail, if we make it to the finals, is at Purdue andwe get invited to a restaurant called the Triple X family restaurant,Philbeck said. All the kids get excited to go.At the end of the day, Philbeck has enjoyed running the programhere at North for the last 10 years and will continue to do so for howeverlong he can.PHILOSOPHY CLUBDEBATE CLUBm « #Nathan Kenshur, Patrick Wailes, Jared Winslow, Mason Green,Nicholas Irmscher, and Jonah Wolf represent Philosophy Club.Nathan Kenshur and Tate Ensmenger prove that Debate Club is rarelyas serious as it sounds.
