Description: AMIGOS CLUBQUESTIONAND ANSWERwith Itzel DiazWhat is Amigos Club?In Amigos Club, we try to do more things in theschool and in the community. For example, they hada Hispanic and Latino night here at North. We dothings that will put us more out there with school, like finding out about scholarships and getting moreinvolved in the community. During meetings, weusually talk about activities that are happening, likeon campus, that we can participate in.What do you like about the club?It has a family feel. Everyone in there is really close, and Mrs. Sweeney is in charge, and shes really nice. Its just really fun to be in there. How has the club helped you personally? Here in Bloomington, theres not really a lot ofLatinos. It showed me that theres more stuff forLatinos to do than I thought, and it has helped meput myself more out there.photos and stories by: Ellen WillibeyAn Aspiring AmigaSarah Graves (left photo), a senior at North, was one of few studentswho won the Outstanding Latino High School Student Award. The awardisnt given to just anyone, and there are many considerations. Participationis one of the biggest things the award looks for.For three or four years, Ive been in Amigos Club, and right now Imtrying to build it up so when I leave I can feel comfortable that its in goodhands, Graves said. However, her involvement in the club isnt the only thing thatsimportant. Engagement with extracurricular and volunteering is crucial aswell.Ive been with orchestra and playing my cello for about eight years, four of which have been here, Graves said. I got to go on trips, and be inthe community. Ive been volunteering for over a year at global gifts, a fairtrade store, and that helps me really feel good about doing something for agood cause. There are a lot of other clubs Ive tried out for too, like scienceolympiad, even though Im not very good at science. Just different events, different clubs, getting involved. Thats really a big part.Graves has put a lot into the club to make it better, but how has theclub helped her?Its a Latino heritage club, and for a while I didnt really connect withthat part of my identity, she said. I just wanted to be a normal American.I didnt have a lot of interest in that. By being in [Amigos Club] I wasconnected with opportunities, like last year I went to a Latino conference atIU, which was really great. So I think its helped me grow as a person andfigure out my identity and my involvement in my culture.UMPKINAmigos Club brings moreheritage and culture to North. Tocelebrate Dia de los Muertos, orDay of the Dead, they organizeda pumpkin contest. Pumpkinswere made in Den, andindividual pumpkins could beentered as well. On the Thursdaybefore Halloween, all thepumpkins were in the library, and there was a bucket to votefor the best pumpkin. Some ofthe pumpkins in the contest arefeatured on the left.
