A Librarian For the People:Saying Goodbye to Mrs. LoserBy Sydney PiercyThe flags of all the countries lining the ceiling, thecountless books, and the student painted muralelegantly decorating the wall make the library a calmand inviting place at North, where students can befound doing everything from eating lunch, todiscussing controversial topics in Students forInformed Democracy.[Everything mentioned above, from the flags, tosponsorship of the club, was done or overseen by Mrs.[Loser, the Librarian, although she has been more thanjust a librarian to so many.Mrs. Loser has spent all her years here, up until hervery last, as she is retiring this year, doing everythingin her power to leave a strong, powerful legacy atNorth.Considering that its her last year at North, Mrs. Loser[reflected on some of her favorite memories at North, some of which were taking students to the bookstore[downtown, and starting meaningful programs likebooks for building lives. She is a book slinger, as she calls herself, as she is[always making sure everyone gets to experience themagic and power of reading. As much as Mrs. Loser[loves books, she is a librarian for the people. Its a people business, more than a book business,(Loser says with a smile. And Loser loves the people, most specifically thestudents, her favorite part of her job.I love their energy, I love their creativity, and I lovetheir passions, Loser said.Loser has been working at North since 1986, andsince then put in countless years of valuable serviceand had monumental influence. When asked abouther biggest accomplishment, Loser talks about thebook collection in the library. When walking intothe North library, spread out over a table front andcenter, a special collection of books can be foundcovering a theme or surrounding an idea aboutsomething that is actually relevant and important tostudents. This is what Loser is most proud of.Loser has also sponsored and help orchestrate things, like, the Evening of the Arts, Book Buddies,Books for Building Lives, and many more clubsand events, all which journey outside the job box ofthe average librarian, highlighting how specialLoser truly is.Loser genuinely seems to respect and love North, for she defines it as, A student place ... because nomatter where the student comes from or what thestudent brings to this place, we celebrate their gifts,we celebrate their talents, we celebrate theirdiversity... It is a school that is reflective I think ofthe world.Although Loser is retiring, her legacy will live on atNorth and she will always be remembered in thehigh regard she deserves. When asked to share some jwords of wisdom to all the students at North, shereplied with her tagline as she calls it:Do what you love. |
