Description: Energy Crisis and SnowAlthough many Bloomington residents were disappointed because of no snow on Christmas, theygot their share of cold and snow the first few weeksof 1977 when temperatures dropped to sub-zeroand the wind chill factor dipped to — 57.All MCCSC schools were closed on January 5,7,10, 11, 14, 18, and 31 because of hazardous driving conditions caused by snow and ice. Also, onJanuary 12 students were sent home after firstperiod because of frozen pipes. But on January 24,25, 26, 27, and 28 Bloomington North aloneclosed down simply because there was no fuel toheat the building. When North reopened teacherswere advised to give long-range assignments incase school closed indefinitely without warning.The School Board announced that Phase II wouldgo into operation: all after school activities werecanceled or moved to another place; all doorswere locked except the front doors by the library;home basketball games and athletic practiceswere held at University Middle School.But shipments of fuel came in and classes werenot canceled for the rest of the year.
