Why do you bike to school everyday?Over the summer, I did a bunch of reading on the impactswe have over the environment. One of those is oceanacidification, which is basically where the C02 emitted bindswith H20 in the sea. It forms bicarbonate which is a negativemolecule and it takes bicarbonate ions out. Bicarbonate ionsare essential for the plankton and coral exoskeleton toform. Basically we are killing all the coral, and thatmotivated me to ride my bike. How has biking changed your perception of driving?I dont hate driving, because we depend on it a lot. I stillhave to drive once in a while, Id say I ride about 90 percent.I definitely feel more connected to things, I have more of anappreciation, you get to take it in more.Do you encounter much animosity from cars? Not too much, Ive never had anyone flip me off or yell atme. On DeCycles we did though, big semis would time itperfectly and gun it so the smoke would be in our faces.Do you think youll be a lifelong bike rider?Probably, I watched this movie called Ride the Divide andpeople ride from Banff, Canada all the way to Mexico, so Imgoing to try to do that, maybe next summer. Its selfsupportive, so you just have a backpack. If you could say something to everyone that drives cars, what would it be?I would just say that we are a part of this world, we dontown it. That is a big thing that we need to recognize. Thisworld is not ours and we have to treat it that way.Has biking helped you become an overall better athlete?I really only got into biking a few years ago, when I went onDeCycles, but it has made me a better athlete. How does biking lend itself to other parts of your life?It helps me stay more positive. Whenever I have to drive mycar Im like dang it. I always get down because I am able toconnect to the impact that its having. Biking for me, I see itas helping rather than hurting. I would say that it connectsin a way and I feel more positive.> by Ella Flynn17« |
