BlackHistory Month brings peopletogether. The Black History MonthCelebration and AfricanAmerican Read-In are groundbreaking projects that startedthis year by seniors ShaiWarfield and Raven Sherman.Black History Month was first created as thesecond week in February, the birthdays of AbrahamLincoln and Frederick Douglas, as Negro HistoryWeek by Carter G. Woodson and the Associationfor the Study of Negro Life and History. North hasalways recognized Black History Month, but thecelebrations were geared more toward AfricanAmerican students. Seniors Raven Sherman andShai Warfield decided to change that.I felt that in years prior there was no celebrationthat included all students, Sherman said. Thecelebration was a read-in. Students and teachersread literature that was written about AfricanAmericans or by African Americans. Shermanintroduced people who were going to speak or read.Being able to introduce people and showcasedifferent things about black history was such anhonor. Im not Martin Luther King or anything, but itwas to show our culture and background.Sherman and Warfield plan to recruit students totake charge and organize the next Black HistoryMonth Celebration and to join the group Movement.Being a leader in the celebration was just suchan honor, Sherman said.
