Description: |
Elementary kids everywhere, chess pieces scattered, boards rolled up, needing to be spread out on everytable is how freshman Guthrie Douglas describes his Thursday afternoons at University Elementary school. He volunteers to help those students who are involved with the same club Douglas joined in the third grade. My dad taught me when I was 6 or 7, Douglas said. Now both have spent the previous 6 yearsteaching University students the games basics. However, Douglas said teaching kids about chess ischallenging because hes only a few years older than them.We teach them how the pieces move, how to win, how to not lose, Douglas said. We try to keep themon task and doing something other than [fighting with] each other.Regardless, Douglas said he is determined to remain involved with his former elementary schools cluband willing to put up with unruly children. Even though North does have a chess club of its own, Douglasnever thought about spending his time with the organization. Its on the same day as chess at University, he said.Douglas does find the time to participate with the North marching band, and he has to travel between hiselementary school and his high school on Thursdays.By the time Im done, Im too sore to move. I eat and go to bed. I have no social life.Yet in spite of the difficulties associated with his dedication to the group, Douglas believes the experiencewill help him for the future.I want to teach when Im older, and having this experience will help me in the long run. |
