Bloomington High School North, Nikean, 2012, Page 97

Description: Nikean: How did you get involved in United Students leadership?Kalina: Originally there were two other leaders and for reasons they had to stop. So theyhanded it over to me with help. Ive taken over and were actually getting another leader, whos going to help doing it. So it was just passed down to me.N: Whats it like being on leadership?K: Its a lot of work. Theres a lot of planning involved into the different meetings becausewere changing the style of meetings and how were doing everything. So Im having torestructure every single thing about the club. And next year were pretty much gonna startover from scratch.N: Why are you changing everything?K: Were changing everything because we want this group to be something thats not soexclusive looking. Were viewed as a clique in a way from a lot of people. We want to besomething everyone is comfortable joining and want to do and want to have fun with. Butstill without it being a joke.N: What do you plan on doing in the future?K: We want to be out there more. So when we do things theyre going to be bigger andmore organized. Were going to do Day of Silence and we might do National Coming Outday. Were not really sure yet.N: Are you going to do fundraisers?K: We might have a shop for like a week. Homemade rainbow crafts of sorts. Were notreally sure yet.N: What is the hardest part of being on leadership?K: I think the hardest part is having the pressure to make sure everything is organizedand everything comes together and help people with a really tough experience in their lifethat can really drastically change their life. Because coming out and helping others withcoming out is something that will be a major event change in their life. So you have theweight of making that a positive experience on your shoulders.N: With all the people in United Students do you help people with their coming out?K: We so far, talk as a group about coming out and also about helping others coming outand advise with it. People take what they want from the group. There havent been toomany big things.N: What goes on during an actual meeting?K: We structure it so we introductions then we have circle discussions. We pick a topic forthe week, like helping, giving advice with coming out, or life in college or after college andbeing out. Or having a job and being out. Well discus that and sometimes well have aspeaker or a video or a game relating to it. Then well have snacks like cupcakes or cookies and well close with some important information. And thatll be a group meeting.-3COp=
