Description: When The Going Gets ToughFreshman taste the hard work of varsity, andseniors take a trip down memory lane.Coming down the final hill at the Indiana University cross country course, senior Holly Biggs and freshmen IsabelRoberts-Hamilton and Kate Raphael getready for the finish. Roberts-Hamiltonenjoys having a senior to run with. Itmotivates me because I always hadsomeone beside me and it made merun faster, Roberts-Hamilton said.Photo by Hannah LukemeyerMost athletes would expect to gointo a varsity sport as a junior orsenior, but imagine going into it as afreshman. The shock of going from middleschool sports to a high school varsity teamwas experienced by freshman Kate Raphaelwho runs cross country. It was pretty intense at first, Raphael said.I never really trained that hard before. Ihave a really good coach and lots of otherunderclassman to be with, but its still prettyhard. For the varsity team, the amount the playershave to run is far more than the players injunior varsity. We run about 40 or so miles a week, andthen after that we do more workouts, Raphael said. After all of it I get pretty exhausted.Although Raphael enjoys the varsity team, its a lot of hard work.it gets really stressful sometimes, Raphaelsaid. I need to go to sleep earlier, eat well,do school work and all of that, but it can getpretty nice knowing a lot of the seniors. Theseniors are so nice, and its great to train withpeople who are older. The sad part is seeingthem all leave.Freshman Grant Sims was also involved ina varsity sport like Raphael, only he playedbasketball.Going into varsity basketball was definitelya new thing, and nothing I could have prepared myself for, Sims said. I was as ready asI could be. Its every morning at 6:30 and thenwe have after school practice. It can get prettyrough if I have a lot of assignments due, but Ifigure it out.Even though for Sims schoolwork can getstressful, he said it was still worth it to be onvarsity.Just the experience and getting preparedfor the next four years to come and everyoneon the team is enough to keep me, Sims said.Everyday you get to know people and youneed to work harder to try to make yourselfbetter than you were before. When senior Ann Zerfas was a freshman, she was in the same situation as Raphael andSims.Mainly I remember I got hit by a wholehigh school game, at IU soccer camp thecoach decided to do a double roster, Zerfassaid. Even though it was a pretty overwhelming, I adapted. It was exciting, but it got prettycrazy. After four years of playing varsity soccer,Zerfas looks forward to graduating, but shewill miss her experience on the team. One thing is that Ill miss playing with mysister on a competitive team, Zerfas said. Ididnt want to at first but weve really grownas friends.Ill obviously miss the girls, and Illmiss the fact that our team wasnt a team, buta family. Now Zerfas is on her way out of the highschool varsity world, but she has somethingto say to the freshmen that may go throughthe same thing one day.Just keep working hard, Zerfas said. Bedetermined and dont lose sight of love forthe game. Thats what keeps you going.Story by Kendra KasparJunior Katie Stanhouse and sophomore Sam Eberle talk inbetween putts. Iwould say me and my teammates all have pretty good relationships, Eberle said. They all know that Id be there for them if they needed me and Iknow they would be there for me if I ever needed them.Photo by Allie KamenDuring the state 200 IM event, sophomore Max Irwin comes up for air between strokes.
