emmalovelandMost teenagers spend their weekdays in the academicwhirlwind called high school. Hours of lessons, tediousnote taking and numerous tests consume studentsfree time every Monday through Friday. This fact also stood true for senior Emma Love-land—for at least half the time.Loveland was involved in Indiana UniversitysContinuing Studies Program, and took coursesonline during her freshman, sophomore and junioryears of high school. Her schedule for thefirst three years required attendingNorth on either maroon or gold dayswhile completing the rest of her highschool course requirements on hercomputer at home.I would do lessons, and taketests (online), Loveland said. The program left me with moretime to do stuff like volunteering.Lovelands outside-of-schooleffort hasnt been solely focused onacademia. She has spent countless hoursworking with many of Bloomingtons nonprofit organizations.Ive volunteered at the Food Bank,Middle Way House and Ive helpedout with some Lotus stuff, Lovelandsaid. However, when it came time to graduate, Loveland turned her academic focusback to North. She decided not to continue the programas a senior for a number of reasons — theprimary one being she needed to be sureshe earned enough credits in high schoolcourses to earn a diploma. Yet there werealso personal reasons as to why she discontinued participating in lUs program. My Mom and I get along really well andfor a year she was working at home, with me,she said. But when she stopped working athome I got lonely being at home by myself allthe time.story by ZoeWhiteredBenjaminNewmanKevinOcampoNicoleParkerBrittneyPruit146 seniors |
