I Jumping over a hurdle, sophomore Ann Zerfas competes in the 300meter hurdles race. Zerfas enjoys the hurdles because its a fun struggle. Its something other than just plain running. Its a challenge, Zerfas said. She maintained a consistent record with her performances and earnedthe top seed in Regionals and finished fourth.2 Running long distances has become second nature to senior AndrewBuzzelli. Seen here in the 800 meter with senior Jay Sparks, Buzzelli alsoruns the one-mile and two-mile runs. Training for these events requiresdifferent types of endurance. The 800 is more of a speed event whereas the mile and two mile runs are more pacing, Buzzelli said.o Warming up before the Mooresville match, senior Janelle Beasleypractices her backhand. Katrin (Wollinger) and I have had a lot of longmatches this year so weve had to keep our endurance up, said Beasley, who plays first doubles with Wollinger. In our match against South, weplayed three sets, and it lasted about three and a half hours. As the sun goes down and the field lights get brighter, fansgather in the bleachers talking and enjoying their concession-stand meals. They hear the rumbling music as the announcer calls,Number 20, Jake Tieken! The fans continue to socialize. HomeRun! Jake Tieken! the announcer shouts. All the spectators arenow glued to the baseball field waiting for what will happennext. With all the commotion on and off the field, the last thingthe fans are thinking about is the cell-phone tower flashing in thenear distance.Head coach Richard Hurt beganthe motivational saying of Climb theTower! with the team this season. Thetower contains multiple componentsthat correspond to different goals. It gives you a reminder of what we are playing for, sophomore Jake Tieken said. The tower alternates from red to white seven times which, forthe team, represents seven conference teams. It contains threesets of flashing lights that stand for Sectionals, Regionals andSemi-State. The very top symbolizes the State championship. Inaddition to the colors and lights, the tower has multiple drum-likeCLIMBINGTHE TOWERobjects coming out from it which each represent five wins. Not only does the tower provide motivation to win games but itprovides a visual reminder of team unity. There are wires at the top symbolizing each player, sophomore Skyler Smith said. The cords are there to attach the tower to the ground andmaintain its support, representative of the players efforts in supporting the team and its goals. It makes us more team oriented, senior Matt Bowman said. Itkeeps our mind on whats best for theteam. When the bell rings at 2:30 p.m.and student athletes get ready forpractice, the tower in the distance doesnt seem to exist. But whenthe baseball players walk onto the field to play in a rivalry gameor just to practice, the tower provides much more than receptionto call their parents to pick them up. It represents the entire team, the entire season. We think about it every day, Bowman said.by MahaElsarraga spring sports o 121 o |
