Home Away From Home | Twelveyears ago, junior Laura Hopkins joinedthe Boys and Girls Club, an after-school safe haven that provides activities for five to 18-year-olds. Lookingback she says, If it werent for Boysand Girls Club, Id be in a boot campor something. It was my anti-every-thing. Since she decided to becomea volunteer when she was in seventhgrade, Hopkins has tried to make theclub an enjoyable retreat for the othermembers. Although Boys and GirlsClub works around her schedule, shesaid she is usually there every dayfrom three to eight p.m. Her responsibilities include signing people in atthe front desk, as shown on the right, and spending time with the kids. I liketo hang out with the girls that are introuble because if they hang out withme they become more behaved, shesaid. Hopkins likes to be around thecollege students who work there because theyre like big brothers andbig sisters to (her). Volunteering helpsHopkins prepare for college becauseshe sees social work as a future career. (Boys and Girls Club) gives kids achance no matter what, Hopkins said.A Day On, Not a Day Off | Seniors Tricia Whitaker and JackieStreet load peanut butter into a boxat a Hoosier Hills Food Bank warehouse.
