Description: The girls soccer team seemed to be facingan obstacle at the start of the year. Afterlosing its coach and over half of its startingseniors, including the goalie, something had tobe done to help the team keep its winning reputation. Four new coaches and an incoming classof freshman were ready to take on the task.Although Hess was amazing, she was onlyone person, junior captain, Maggie Richardssaid. Its just amazing the support were gettingfrom our coaches. To tackle the problem of losing so many oftheir players and having a young team, thecoaches took a different approach to helping thegirls come together and win.The new girls had never played as starters. Atfirst, they werent used to the pace of the game, junior captain Ann Zerfas said.Zerfas felt that the new group of coaches hadmade a signifigant amount of progress in helpingthe young team.Freshmen Paige Strobel agreed that the newsystem worked great. All the coaches really work well together,Strobel said. There is a main coach for varsity, two coaches for junior varsity, and a goaliecoach. She and the other freshmen had to work hardto excel at the high school level. The coaches [helped] me get stronger andget faster so I can body [the older girls] up andplay against them, Strobel said. The new freshmen and coaching system havetried to cope with what could have been a devastating loss to the team.Rather than making this a transition year,Zerfas said, weve all grown to believe that wecan [eventually] make it to state.By Jad LabbanCelebrating a victory over Edgewood, senior Molly Frank and teammates hug and rejoice.
