The team takes the field, players standingready and alert at their pre-set positions. The whistle blows and everyone, all at once, lunges, darts or scurries depending on theirposition. The boys soccer team had difficulties putting their best effort forth. However, the captainsstepped up and were prepared to urge their teammates togive their all, in a game and in practice.Determining the specific dilemma this season was difficult to do. No one could quite pin the issue down, butplayers were ready to resolve it.We [seemed] to lose some of the edge that we used tohave in previous teams, senior Alex Minor said.In order to resolve this indefinable issue, captainsreiterated the importance of sticking together and stayingmotivated if the teams goals were to be reached.Obviously, we [wanted] to get to state. We almostalways go and [didnt] want to not go because we [had]decided to slack [off,] Minor said.Senior Jason Waterman believed that the teams motivation depended on everyone fulfilling their responsibilities as a team member. We [could] cheer the team on only so much. Then they[had] to actually put in the effort to practice, play theirhardest and cheer on themselves, Waterman said. The team learned that it takes work to become a composed and tough team.We [were] a good team and we [had] it in us to win,Waterman said. We just [had] to have the motivation toget to the games as an entire team.By Yleena ArmitageAt the Hoosier Cup tournament in September, seniorStephen Zerfas dribbles theball down the field.
