It is hardto pass people.Photo by Shannon WhiteThis cross country season, the first runnerto cross the finish line is not likely to befrom North. The team no longer has onedominate runner who is always expected to racewell, helping the team score crucial points. This season, the team has had to find a way tomake an impact in meets without having a singlesuperstar runner pulling them along. The lack of a dominant runner has been accepted and a new race technique has been putinto effect. The team no longer depends on onerunner to finish among the top competitors, butinstead picks up points with a larger pack in themiddle. The idea is to get better as a pack by running as a pack, junior Charlie Wagner said. Itsimportant to all run together and pull each otheralong. Its a strategy designed to produce team victories, the entire team has to push one another;there is no relying on one single person. The pack idea flows into the practice plan aswell as the team mentality.Coach [Warthan] has us running together inworkouts, junior Jeff Sparks said. The strategy is that the stronger and more experienced guys will help encourage the youngerrunners to push themselves and stay with thepack. If the more inexperienced runners get theconfidence in practice to stay with the top runners, then the hope is that they will run with thepack in the meets as well.We really have had to come together as ateam. It has affected our attitude now that we runand train as a pack. We have become a pack inevery aspect as a team, Wagner said. It hasmade us closer.By Hannah LukemeyerSophomores Logan Herendeen,Sebastian Kagemann and juniorCharlie Wagner run during practice.
