Snip, Sew, Stitch, and Create. During secondand fourth period on gold days down in theFACS area Brenda Galyans classes, whichincludes nearly 50 students, are creating newclothes and other projects in their textiles andfashion class. This class has an interesting twist to itbecause it combines students of all skill levels and allowsthem to work on almost any project they can imagine. This class is not simply sewing and making clothes;students are doing many different types of projects andusing many different techniques.I have kids sewing, working on fashion sketches,Galyan said. Some kids knit or work on needlework. The set-up of the class tailors to anyone that has aninterest in the fashion world and allows them to workon projects of different levels at their own pace. SeniorMariah Lane has taken the class every year that she hasbeen at North. She has made a lot of different clothes inthe class and often wears what she makes. You basically choose what to make and do what youwant. Mrs. Galyan knows how to do everything and is areally big help, Lane said. She has done a project that involves a recycled skirtmade up of patches and different types of fabrics. Oneof Lanes favorite projects included using one of Mrs.Gaylans vintage patterns and making a dress from that.Clothes were not the only thing made in textiles andfashion. Some students worked on making cover handbags. This is similar to a tote that has buttons that allowfor the cover to be changed as often as wanted. Sophomore Katie McMillian thought of her own unique project.McMillian had a family friend that had been encouraging her to show pigs. Finally, McMillian agreed to showpigs at the fair and is really enjoying the experience. Shedecided to create a banner for the 4-H fair as her project. It has a fuzzy pig head from a blanket. I ironed on lettersfor the two pigs names and mine. I thought all the pigslooked the same and if I had a banner, then people wouldknow.McMillian enjoyed the lack of structure in the class.[You] dont have certain assignments. Of course we haveto do some papers and stuff. You can do whatever youwant. I have made two tie blankets. I just thought of thisbanner idea. The projects tutor to the skill and needs of the creator. It allows students that are pursuing a career in fashion towork on their skills or it allows students to create some oftheir own clothes to show off. Making clothes in this classgives the students a different type of environment compared to the structured English and Math classes.Everything is based on their level of experience, Galyan said. All students are not able to do the same things, based on ability. They can do whatever they choose to do.We have girls that will make their own prom dresses.IBy Hannah Lukemeyer(Left) Sophomore Crystal Gorrondonahelps sophomore Chelsea Sarneckiwork on her Halloween costume.
