Description: udget cuts have been the topic ofdiscussion at the lunch tables, during English classes, and after-schoolthis winter. Select classes, teachersand programs are being cut from thestates school systems.Book Club, which has been ongoing for atleast five or six years, will no longer receive newbooks to read for each monthly meeting dueto the complete elimination of money from thelibrary, including salaries for the library staff. The idea of Book Club without a library withmoney...we cant really do anything, Book ClubPresident Zoe Slaughter said.Because Book Club is no longer allowed toorder new books, members made an attempt tofundraise by selling candy during school. Thisidea, however, was not approved.Due to their setback in funding, members ofthe community reached out to help the Club. Its such a shame that the moneys gone...people have come forward to help us, Librarianand Book Club Sponsor Kathy Loser said.Loser received a package from a friend atthe public library containing sets of three of thebooks the group planned to read. Parents havewritten checks as well.On top of fund raising to purchase new books,Book Club members face another challenge. With Loser losing her position, they must find anew representative for the following year.Loser is saddened this has happened whenthe club is bigger and more popular than ever. Were trying to expand and show people it is aclub that needs money if [fundraising and findinga new representative] doesnt go well, Slaughtersaid.13 y Caitlin StrobelSophomores Alisha Coon, Zoe Slaughter and Samantha Hughes listento librarian Kathy Loser during a Book Club meeting.
